Hill pasture, native bush, and a spring-fed lake on a Northland cattle farm kept organic for decades.
Organic pasture and a spring-fed lake share the gentle to moderate hills of Titoki Downs, a farm of 70 hectares in Northland, New Zealand, 20 minutes from Whangārei. It has its own airstrip, where guests can arrive by helicopter.
The renovated homestead, with Asian and Pacific influences, has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a study, and three cottages serve family, guests, or rental. Auckland is two and a half hours away by State Highway 1.
Organic Charolais cattle graze the pasture, among native bush, good farm tracks, and a stand of mature pine. Powdered seaweed is the farm’s main fertilizer. Boreholes and rainwater collection supply water, with separate lines for the house and the livestock; power comes from the grid, gas, and solar; and sheds and machinery facilities serve the land. Accommodations, events, and outdoor recreation run alongside the farming, and a young banana plantation is coming on.
What makes this a great rural estate
Titoki Downs has been farmed under strict organic practices for decades, and it is both a working cattle farm and a country retreat.
