Minette Bay Lodge

At the head of Douglas Channel, on the threshold of the Great Bear Rainforest, Minette Bay Lodge holds 31.5 hectares of freehold oceanfront on the north coast of British Columbia. Salmon rivers, deep fjords, and glacier-fed lakes lie all around, and the town of Kitimat is five minutes away.

All five species of Pacific salmon run in these waters, with halibut, lingcod, Dungeness crab, and prawns. The Kitimat River brings steelhead in spring, chinook in early summer, and coho into the fall. Several helicopters can land on the lawn at once, bound for remote rivers and alpine ridges. From May to October humpbacks feed in the channels and orcas are often seen, and in late summer grizzlies fish the salmon rivers.

Built in 1995 in a Cape Cod style, the lodge has about 600 square meters on three levels, with eleven bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Its interiors recall an English country house: hand-finished fir floors, open fireplaces, bespoke cabinetry, and a library for long evenings, with a caretaker’s suite and an unfinished games room. Outside are verandas, a wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit, and an ocean-view deck of 250 square meters.

Salmon-spawning creeks cross the grounds beneath footbridges, among forest trails, an orchard, and a bee yard. Municipal parkland and protected Haisla Nation lands border the estate. Minette Bay is a registered water aerodrome, engineered plans for a private dock are in place, and the estate’s Rural Resort zoning supports both private and hospitality use. Below the lodge, the shore changes character with every tide.
