Duck marshes across the Pampas, and a traditional estancia house among old trees.
Ponds and small marshes break the flat Pampas country in and around Las Totoras, a working ranch of 500 hectares in Buenos Aires Province, in the heart of Argentina’s duck country. The city of Buenos Aires is 400 kilometers away, about four hours by paved road.
Totora, a native bulrush, grows in the marshes, and the water holds resident ducks, joined by migrants that arrive at different times of year. Rosy-billed pochard, yellow-billed pintail, speckled teal, red shoveler, and white-faced whistling duck are among them, and the wetlands support duck shooting on the property.
The main house is a traditional estancia house, in excellent condition, set among old trees and open lawns. It sleeps ten in five bedrooms, with five bathrooms, and has two sitting rooms with fireplaces, a trophy room, a games room, and a bar.
The ranch grows wheat, corn, and soybeans and breeds polo ponies and Quarter Horses. In season the house is used as a duck-hunting lodge, and the lodge is included in the sale.
What makes this a great rural estate
Las Totoras lies in the heart of Argentina’s duck country, where resident birds and migrants arriving at different times keep numbers steady through the season.
